• The KSE-100 closed at 170,512, down 4,817 points or 2.75% on the week. Four of five sessions finished lower, with the first four taking 6,464 points out of the index before Friday clawed back 1,647 of them.

  • One story ran the entire week: the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude gained 13% to close at a four-month high of $109.97 after US and Iranian forces exchanged attacks on Gulf shipping - the largest escalation since the conflict began. Monday set the tone with 311 stocks falling against 154 rising. By Thursday, the worst single session of the week, the index had touched 168,865 - down 3,079 points in a day - as local institutions trimmed positions aggressively and activity across the whole market ran at nearly 5-to-1 in favour of sellers.

  • Friday reversed course entirely. The index fell to 166,141 in the opening minutes, then recovered to close at 170,512 on reports that a six-member Gulf bloc is considering direct talks with Iranian officials over the Strait. The 1,647-point recovery came in under two hours.

  • The external numbers told a different story to the index. August remittances rose 17% year-on-year to $3.7bn, SBP reserves reached $18.3bn, and Moody's noted that Pakistan has absorbed this conflict shock better than the 2022 crisis. The index is now 10.7% below July's record close and 18.3% above its 52-week low. The IMF's fourth review begins 22 September - the next scheduled test for both the market and the macro story.
